Clearshield

ClearShield protected glass:

  • Is always easier to clean and keep clean
  • Stays cleaner for longer
  • Resists contamination build up, corrosion, staining and discoloration

The award-winning ClearShield System which converts ordinary glass into Low M® (Low Maintenance) glass has been specially developed for the renovation, protection and maintenance of both new and already installed glass. ClearShield provides lasting protection for glass and is an ideal solution for:

  • Building & Architectural Construction
  • Commercial & Industrial Applications
  • Residential Applications
  • Hotels / Food & Beverage Industry
  • Clinics & Hospitals
  • Marine / Maritime
  • Solar Panels
  • Decorative Glass

Specific formulations of ClearShield have been developed for different applications.

Introduction

Glass is the only material to have fully met the demands of modern architecture over the last few decades. Glass brings light and color into our lives and creates a comfortable environment. It offers a transparent interface between the outside world and the interior of buildings. Glass is both functional and aesthetic, creating a desire to use glass increasingly in modern architecture. However, people tend to neglect the fact that glass is susceptible to damage, corrosion and staining from a range of sources, and that it requires ongoing care and regular cleaning to maintain the original surface condition and clarity of vision.

Common Problems Faced

  • Inevitably, unprotected glass becomes contaminated over time, ruining a building's appearance.
  • Dirt, grime and hard water create unsightly and resistant contamination and water spots on unprotected glass.
  • Cleaning becomes very difficult, increasing the time and effort required to maintain it.
  • Glass that is not properly cleaned can attract bacteria, viruses and become unhygienic.
  • The poor appearance of glass surfaces can affect reputation, values and building occupant’s satisfaction and well being.

Causes of Damage

  • Common causes are water run-off from concrete panels or plaster, lubricants, some cleaning agents, and general construction site dust and dirt build up.
  • Alkaline solutions with a pH greater than 7 can damage glass surfaces.
  • Glass can also be attacked by water to leave water marks that are hard to remove, which can cause permanent damage if left.
  • Tree sap, bird lime and atmospheric pollution spoils the look of unprotected glass and easily stains the surface.

Why do we need to protect Glass surfaces?

No unprotected surface is safe from the harsh effects of weather combined with the harmful corrosive reactions of pollutions; and glass is no surprise.

The surface of glass is not smooth and consists of microscopic peaks and potholes, ideal for both organic and inorganic contaminants to sit, occupy and chemically react with the glass, disfiguring its clear and pristine surface.

Unlike a coating, ClearShield becomes part of the glass so it will not peel, flake or crack and prevents contaminants from attaching and bonding to the surface and prevents damage caused by corrosion and chemical attack.

Glass Corrosion

Just as metal rusts, glass is subjected to a corrosion process caused by reactions between the glass surface and contaminants in the atmosphere. Even a single droplet of moisture on unprotected glass can produce sufficient damage to be visible in good lighting:

The surface of glass is not smooth and consists of microscopic peaks and potholes. Both organic and inorganic contaminants fill these potholes and chemically react with the glass, firmly bonding to the surface. Because of this, cleaning glass becomes more difficult and visibility deteriorates.
