Self-Cleaning Glass?
Several international glass manufactures have launched ‘Self-Cleaning’ Titanium Dioxide coatings in selected countries. There is some confusion as to whether this type of glass is actually an alternative to ClearShield ‘Self-Cleaning’ Titanium Dioxide coatings- 2 important properties:
- It is hydrophilic. That is - it attracts water and causes it to ‘sheet’ on the surface of the glass.
This prevents the formation of separate droplets and ensures that loose particles of dust and dirt can be washed away easily during normal rainy weather.
- It is photocatylic – UV radiation causes the coating to oxidise dirt and organic deposits, loosening them from the surface of the glass.
ClearShield is hydrophobic – it prevents the retention of water in the pores of the glass surface and therefore the bonding of contaminants, both organic and inorganic. It also protects glass against corrosion, avoiding staining and discoloration and keeping glass as an easy to clean surface.
